Baltimore Wildlife Education: Mole Exterminator

It often sneaks up on you. One day you have a beautiful lawn and the following day it is covered in heaps of sand. You have moles. Moles will not eat the roots of your plants. They are merely looking for earthworms to eat. Nevertheless, your garden may be covered in tunnels. This could cause your whole garden to collapse.

Identifying whether you have moles.
You may notice mounds and ridges on your lawn. This is where moles have dug their runways. They displace the soil, and that is what you are looking at. There is no way of knowing how many moles are present on your property. You will need to eliminate them one at a time until the problem stops. There may be soft spots on your lawn. This means that the ground underneath has been displaced. Apart from the unsightly mounds on your lawn, you will now have to be careful where you walk. These spots can easily collapse leaving you with a twisted ankle or even a fractured leg. It will also leave an unsightly hole on your lawn.

Keeping them out
· Moles are extremely sensitive to smell. As they are unable to see well, they use this sense to navigate. You can take advantage of this by placing foul smelling mole repellents in your garden. You can also place onions or garlic into the holes that they have already dug.
· When you are putting down new turf it is a clever idea to put down mole netting. This will prevent moles from digging underneath your grass or plants. It will not deter them from moving to adjacent areas so make sure that you place it everywhere.
· Moles are sensitive to sound. You can place glass bottles in their tunnels. Leave to bottles to stand up straight so that the wind blows over the top. It will make a whistling noise that is said to make the moles move on to greener pastures.
· Setting humane traps can help you eliminate these bothersome critters. Make sure to check them regularly so that you do not leave the mole to suffer unnecessarily. You can then relocate them to a more suitable place.
· Placing cans in the tunnels can cause moles to crawl into it. You can then remove the can and the mole and relocate it. This is an inexpensive, humane way to get moles out of your garden.

Exterminators
If you have exhausted all of your options it might be time to phone an exterminator. Exterminators will come in and evaluate your problem. They will then install the necessary equipment needed to capture the ground moles. They will return every few days in order to check the traps. They will remove moles that have been trapped and will make sure that the equipment is working properly. They will keep doing this until you are sure that there are no more moles left on your property.
